A compelling DNAinfo article caught our eye recently about the brand new Whole Foods store finally opening up at 255 E. Grand Avenue in Streeterville, but not simply because of the store’s Grand Opening however, but because of the reaction by many who live in and around the Streeterville neighborhood.
According to those interviewed in the story, many local Streeterville residents haven’t had a convenient grocery store option since Dominick’s closed back in 2013. Although hard to believe, some locals were walking roughly a mile to the next-nearest grocery store—a statement that doesn’t even seem possible in a downtown neighborhood as well-developed as Streeterville.
But depending on where you live, many found that the Jewel-Osco at 550 N. State Street in River North was in fact the closest big-box store to them prior to the new 50,000 square foot Whole Foods opened for business this past Wednesday, ending the weekly, or sometimes even daily, hassle of picking up a few groceries here or there.
Given the celebratory mood of those mentioned in the DNAinfo piece, it’s safe to say living within a closer proximity to a major grocery store is a pretty big deal when calling downtown Chicago home, so if you happen to be in the market for that perfect Streeterville condo, a good place to start your search may just be right around the corner from the fancy new Whole Foods over at Grand and Columbus.
