What is a Bungalow Style Home in Chicago?

As one of the most popular housing styles in the Chicago area, you’ll still find tens of thousands of bungalows standing in neighborhoods in and around Chicago even today. In fact, about one-third of all single-family homes in Chicago are bungalows, commonly built up around the city in what’s called the Bungalow Belt.

Originally constructed starting around the early 1900s, some Chicago bungalows are close to, or sometimes even more than, 100 years old today. The bungalow came about as an answer to the demand for homeownership. People were looking for a home to call their own, and a bungalow could be easily adapted to fit on one of the city’s narrow lots. Chicago bungalows were primarily built between 1910 to the mid 1930s at a time when people wanted to own a home with a yard. They appealed to middle-class families because they were lower in price, but also came with modern features.

Common Characteristics of Chicago Bungalows

A Chicago bungalow is usually a brick home that stands one-and-a-half stories tall, and also includes a full basement. Typically, steps lead up to a front porch, and you’ll find lots of front windows. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, Chicago bungalows are narrow at the front and the rear of the home, but long on the sides, much like a rectangle.

A Chicago bungalow has a low-pitched roof, and sometimes it contains a dormer window where the attic is. Floor plans are fairly standard with a bungalow, but sometimes there are a few variations. While mostly brick, the exterior of a Chicago bungalow may have a few decorative patterns or even some simple limestone ornamentation. On the inside, a bungalow is designed to efficiently use its space.

Where You’ll Find Bungalows in Chicago

Most of the original Chicago bungalows were constructed in what’s referred to as the Bungalow Belt. The neighborhoods make an arc around the city. These days, the Chicago Bungalow Association works to help bungalow owners preserve and maintain the historic homes. There are several designated Bungalow Historic Districts in Chicago, including Gage Park and Brainerd on the city’s southwest side, as well as the Auburn Gresham Bungalow Historic District.

On the northwest side, you’ll find the Hermosa Bungalow District, Portage Park, and North Mayfair. The north side is where you’ll find Talman West Ridge Bungalow District, while South Chicago has the West Chatham Bungalow District. There’s also the South Shore Bungalow District and some other areas with bungalows still standing today, mostly several miles out from the Chicago Loop.
