About Chicago's Edgewater Neighborhood
Edgewater is one of Chicago’s official 77 community areas, and actually one of the more unique neighborhoods thanks to its location right off the lakefront. The aptly named Edgewater community sits on Chicago’s far north side about seven miles from downtown, and because both Lake Shore Drive and the CTA Red Line offer a direct route back and forth, it’s also a pretty convenient place to call home as well. Outside of a great location off the water, Edgewater is also famous of its breathtaking beach, which during the early 1900s was considered a thriving resort destination for city dwellers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Today, however, Edgewater is now a major part of the city landscape and an excellent place to begin a home search, regardless of your individual needs, wants and preferences.
Living in Edgewater Chicago
Outside of what you’ll find along Bryn Mawr and Broadway, much of Edgewater remains residential even today. Countless vintage condo and apartment buildings line Edgewater’s tree-lined streets and along Sheridan Road are dozens of high-rise condo buildings that offer some of the best unobstructed views of Lake Michigan that you’ll find in the city. Locals living in the area love being able to walk to the beach in the summer, while a number of bodegas, markets, shops, and restaurants help fill out the area and give residents everything they need. Loyola University Chicago is also located just north of Edgewater in Rogers Park, so you’ll probably also see plenty of students living in the area as well.
