In Chicago, most everyone has a favorite sports team. You’re either a Cubs or White Sox lover, you never miss a Bulls game, or you’re a die-hard fan of the Bears. But for Chicago hockey fans, the Blackhawks hold a special place in the hearts of many Chicago homeowners, so much so that Blackhawks vanity plates have become the most popular sports license plates on cars in town.
According to the Illinois Secretary of State's office, the Hawks have sold 8,356 speciality license plates, more than any other professional sports team in the state. The Blackhawks license plate features a bright red background with the team logo. The White Sox are next, with 4,893 purchased plates, then the Bears at 4,519, followed by the Cubs at 4,393, and finally the Bulls at 1,528.
In a statement, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White said, "The Chicago Blackhawks license plate was the first in the sports series to be made available to the public, and their fan base embraced the opportunity to purchase the license plates.” The Blackhawks license plates first became available in 2010 after they won the Stanley Cup. All of the other four professional Chicago team plates were unveiled in 2011.
If you don’t already have them, would you adorn your vehicle with Blackhawks plates? They’re not cheap, with a price tag as high as $330 for first-time vanity plates. Each year, the renewal fee is $141, $42 more than it costs to renew standard Illinois license plates. But when you purchase these plates, you're supporting a good cause.
Each set of Chicago Blackhawks license plates that are sold help contribute to the Professional Sports Teams Education Fund, with the funds to be deposited every six months into the Common School Fund.
