Chicago Neighborhoods With Beaches

Living in Chicago means living close to some of the world’s best sites and attractions. Many city neighborhoods also have the advantage of nearby beaches for cooling off during the summer months.  

Edgewater - Edgewater Beach

The lakefront community of Edgewater provides the ideal location for beach access. Situated on the North Side of Chicago, Edgewater borders Lake Michigan. Lined by high-rises and apartment buildings, Edgewater Beach is home to Foster Beach, which provides plenty of space to lounge on the sand and enjoy a waterfront setting.

Lincoln Park - North Avenue Beach

Also on the North Side, the Lincoln Park neighborhood is one of Chicago’s most celebrated neighborhoods. Living here means easy access to North Avenue Beach. The beach has lifeguards and is a popular spot for swimming during the summer season. You can participate in paddleboarding, canoeing, or kayaking on the southern end of the beach. As well, the beach has its own beach house and provides convenient rentals for biking, water sports, and other beach-related equipment. 

Uptown - Montrose Beach

Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood sits just to the south of Edgewater, and it also borders Lake Michigan. Nearby Montrose Beach is a good place to go swimming when lifeguards are on duty during season. You can access paddleboarding, canoeing, or kayaking from the southern end of Montrose Beach. Head to the northern end of the beach for its dog-friendly section. You’ll additionally find showers and restrooms, some rentals, and food concessions at the popular beach.

Gold Coast - Oak Street Beach

The prestigious Gold Coast neighborhood is known for its beautiful homes, but it also provides easy access to Oak Street Beach. This popular swimming beach has volleyball and bike rentals, plus a café, restrooms, and city skyline views. The park is known to host amateur and professional volleyball tournaments during the summer months.

Hyde Park - 57th Street Beach

The Hyde Park neighborhood sits on Chicago’s South Side near Lake Michigan. Residents of Hyde Park commonly head to 57th Street Beach for swimming, while the northern end of the beach provides access to paddleboarding, canoeing, and kayaking. You’ll find food and beverages for sale at the beach, plus as part of Jackson Park, it’s easy to head to the nearby gym and fitness center, gardens, sports courts and more.
